Valley Beater - side - three quarter view 3 - full

Designed to take 25 lb of dry fibre, this is thought to be one of only six built by Valley Iron Works in Appleton, Wisconsin and possibly one of only two to survive; the other known example is in regular use at Cave Paper in Minneapolis.

This one came to Hayle Mill in about 1982 with a view to using it for very small trial batches or collaborative projects with artists. We had a very strong square tubular steel stand made for it and fitted it with a 3 phase UK motor. It also has a small pump to supply flushing water into the bedplate area.

As it turned out we ran it only a few times which determined that it was good piece of equipment but we did not get as far as setting up studio facilities for artists so it was never used for such work or production. It has been in dry store since the 1980s. The cast iron tub and fittings could do with wire brushing and repainting but the roll bars are so new that they still show the machining marks from the Valley Iron Works. The motor and stand will be supplied with it but depending on the your location you may wish to fit a new motor to suit your power supply. Bridget O'Mally of Cave Paper tells me the motor on their beater is 10hp, 220/3phase electric, 1170rpm, amp 29/14.5, hertz 60.

This is a large and heavy piece of equipment which is the buyer's responsibility to move from Maidstone, England although I will of course assist.

This beater would suit a very small production mill or large studio/workshop. It is very strongly built suitable for years of use if carefully maintained. I cannot of course guarantee its suitability for any particular purpose but it should handle all types of fibre and be versatile in its adjustments to meet the requirements for the finished pulp.
